She From "Pot Heads and Drumhoops, A Folk History of New Harbour, Trinity Bay"
(1995), by Garry Cranford with Raymond Hillier: Charles Newhook II was the
town's leading citizen. When his wife died, a scribe at Trinity recorded,
"Monday, 2nd April, 1810, Charles Newhook arrived from New Harbour in a
schooner with his wife's corpse on board."The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador: "The eldest son ... he may have been born in New Harbour, church records giving his birthplace as 'Trinity Bay'. ... son of Elizabeth and Charles Newhook. .. . Newhook was killed in St. John's in the spring of 1839 when he fell from the mast of a wrecked vessel on which he had been working".

(The said John PAYNE and Eliza PAYNE having been previously married on the 29 July 1878 by a layman in the absence of the clergyman according to a custom prevailing on the shore,). Married at Broom's Point according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England, By me Joseph J CURLING. The marriage document of John and Mary Ann was lost in a church fire at Birtchy Cove (now Curling), Rev E.Z. Rule Preist. Early in the marriage of Mary Ann they lived in Gilliams, 5 miles west of Summerside. Mary Ann may have been a resi dent of this community. They returned to sumerside later. Noted from List of inhabitants 1838 Western Shores of Newfoundland shows no listing of John Loader. Although this may be a partial list, we can assume that John had not yet come to Newfounland.

John Loader (jr) was born in 1847.

We can assume tha John Sr. arrived in Newfoundland between 1838 and 1847.

Thursday August 2nd, 1849; After dinner we rowed down to Gilliams Cove, about nine miles to visit a family named Blanchard. The wind and tide were against us, and the pulling was very laborious. We reached the place just before sun-down. It is a beautiful little farm, and has quite an imposing appearance from the water. The house is mean and dirty, and the old patriarch, who has lived here nearly seventy years, was in a state of great filth and discomfort. He is nearly ninety years of a ge. His mental faculties are good, but his bodily strength is nearly gone. He welcomed us kindly, and spoke with pleasure of Archdeacon Wix. A young man named Lorder (Loader) who was in the house, whom we had met coming towards us in a boat, inte nding to ask if we would take their dried fish, having concluded that we were traders. He (Loader) had been shipped from Dorsetshire a few years ago as servent to Mr. Brake, and had married and settled here. He expressed great anxiety to have his two children babtized; they were absent with their mother at Cape Gregory, fishing. fifteen miles off; but he resolved to bring them back tomorrow if I would remain till the evening. This I promised.

Saturday August 5th, 1849; God upon us, we joined the Church Ship, released from her disagreeable and discreditable recumbency and under sail about 11 o'clock. The wind was light, but the night beaitifully fine, and soon after midnight we had ta ken leave of the Bay of Islands and were creeping gently along the shore towards Bonne Bay. Two families were brought on board the church ship, that the children might be baptized. One was the younger Blanchard, who had come with his wife and chi ldren in an open boat, all precedding day and night; and the other Lorder (Loader), whom we had seen at Blanchard's senior, and who with his wife anhad rowed some fifteen miles to bring his children for the baptism.

The Community of Summerside:

Sumerside is a small community on the North Shore of the Bay Of Islands bordered on the west by the community of Meadows and on the east by Irishtown. To the south is the water of the Humber Arm - better known to the people of the North Shore as "the bay". This community is one of history, sprit and culture.

Settled in 1840 by John Loder, this community has grown to a population of approximately 900 people. It consists of may entrepeneurs who have successfully opened their own businesses. There are two confectionary stores: Norht Shore Video which of fers a variety of videos, and a dairy bar and McLean's store which meets your everyday needs. Summerside Ultramar offers assistance when you have car troubles and you can expect friendly service while you gas up. Sumerside is also the home of Nor tique Fashions which offers beautiful outer ware and accessories.

Sumerside was the site of the only slate mine (which is currently closed) in the Bay Of Islands. There was also a Herring meal plant which processed meal from the waste of Herring. This meal was then sold as fertilizer.

If you ask a typical teenager what there is to do around Summerside they would probably answer "nothing" but they usually find something to occupy their time. In the winter they spend their time snowmobiling, skating, or skiing. During the summer they spend their time swiming and playing softball in the evenings. Summerside has a beautiful park equipped with a swiming pool, swings, slides, picnic tables and a baseball field.

There is more to Summerside than meets the eye. If you spend a little time you will find that the people are firendly and that the community has a sprit culture and history all its own.

Charles Bannister, My (Ralph Randell) father, was born at Ship Coe, now Port Reston, on March 10, 1893. He married my mother Elizabeth Hyde at Port Rexton on may 29, 1924. Mother was the daughter of Matthew Hyde and Amy Ann (Butler) Hyde of New B onaventure, Trinity Bay. Mother was born at New Bonaventure on Sept. 18, 1901. Grandmother (Amy Ann Hyde) died Nov. 1939, Grandfather (matthew Hyde) died May 1944. Both are buried at New Bonaventure. Father was a fisherman; a sailor; a steel work er at Sydney, Nova Scotia; a logger; a shipyard rigger at Saint John, New Brunswick and halifax, Nova Scotia and a carpenter in St. John's, Gander, Corner Brook, and at the U.S. Naval Base, Argentia. Father died at Port Rexton on June 16, 1952 at the age of 59 years after being disabled for several years with a heart condition. Mother died in St. John's on June 16, 1983 at the age of 81 years 9 months. Both are buried at Port Rexton.

Feadora first married Soloman Butt of Flat island, Bonavista Bay and had two children Augustus and Annie Butt. After Soloman's death she married Henry George King of kerley's Hr., Trinity Bay and had two daughters Lizzie and Alfreda. They also ha d a son John Charles who died while still a baby. Feadora died ar Kearley's Hr. October 1927 and is buried in New Bonaventure. Immediatley after Feadora's death Gus Butt, age 9 years, went to live with his uncle Charlie and Aunt Lizzy. My (Ralph Randell) parrentsuntil he went overseas in Jan. 1940. He spent a short time in the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit before joining the Royal Air Force where he served for the remainder of the war. Gus Married Lizzie Sharp of Scotland and are presently living in Toronto. They have two children John, living in Australia and Diane (Butt) Haynes living in Tottenham, Ontario. Annie lived for a while with her aunt Flora and uncle Dick of Port Rexton. Annie Butt married Jack Russel of Cata lina and have several Children living in Corner Brook and Toronto. Lizzie King married Leslie Locke of New Bonaventure and has a son Levi and a daughter Lorraine (Locke) Randell. Alfreda married Ezekiel march of Hickman Hr., Trinity Bay and has s everal children. Flora married Richard Johnson of Port Rexton. She was the mother of Robert, Stanley,m Myrtle (Johnson) Grandy, Phyllis (Johnson) Seviour and Joyce (johnson) Jinkins. They are all living in Ontario where they have several children each. Richard died at Port Rexton Jan. 1944. Flora died July 4, 1976 in Toronto and is buried there.
